University of Pennsylvania
The University of Pennsylvania, or Penn, is one of the largest universities in the largest cities in the country. However, class sizes are excellent, with a 7.5:1 student to teacher ratio. Penn tops the Ivy League in annual spending, making it extremely well-resourced.
Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, was actually once the second largest city in the British Empire after London. Philadelphia is a very culturally focused city, a haven for art lovers and history buffs. The Academy of Music is located here, and among the huge numbers of museums is one known as the Please Touch Museum!
University City Neighborhoods in Philly
University City is the neighborhood housing Penn, although Fairmount is also very close by and ideal for finding apartment rentals and housing in. This area was the first suburb of Philadelphia, and is known for its wide tree lined streets, generous porches, dining and shopping options.
Penn Paradise
The Penn area is considered a walker's paradise, with a score of 92 out of 100. Dunkin Donuts, Mad Mex and The Saturn Club Hai are all only a hop skip and jump away from Penn, and there are plenty of other restaurant, bookstore, theater, bar and grocery store choices only a short distance away.
Apartments for Penn Students
There are quite a few affordable choices for students in the Penn area, with apartment rentals starting at $450 per month, but most in the mid range area of $600 to $800 per month. You'll have to head a little closer into town to find most of the Philly housing, but the student friendly ones are obvious - choices like School Lane House and Campus Apartments are great for Penn attendees!
If you've just aced an exam and want to cut loose, Pi Lam is one of the closest and most popular choices for nightlife in Philadelphia that is close to University of Pennsylvania. Distrito, The Rotunda and Fiume are popular also, and White Dog Café is only across the road and offers a quieter style of fun.
If you've got a few pennies extra, head further towards the center of Philly to find delicious eats, but more expensive than the cafeteria offers. Matyson offers New American Cuisine, as does Lacroix at the Rittenhouse (although Lacroix has a French twist).
