With a tiny enrolment of under 15,000 students, and an even smaller than usual faculty at only 572, it is difficult to believe that University of North Florida coulod be ranked top of anything. However, this university actually made number five in the list of America's best value colleges and is one of the Best Southeastern colleges according to Princeton Review.

Once Known as Cowford

Jacksonville has come a long way since its founding, when it was known as Cowford because of a narrow crossing on the St John's River used by cattle. It is now the largest city by land area in the US, and the twelfth largest by population.

Performing arts is popular in Jacksonville, and notable events in your university home city include the Gate River Run, Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Planetfest and the World's largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, which is actually a football game.

Jacksonville Neighborhoods for UF Students

Pembroke Pines, Boulevard Heights and Driftwood are some of the neighborhoods closest to UNF - you'll be looking for apartment rentals around here for easy UNF access.

The neighborhood directly surrounding UNF (often known as the University area, surprisingly!), is quite a walkable area, scoring 71 out of 100. Coffee is in short supply within walking distance, but restaurants and grocery stores are plentiful. There are also quite a few bookstore, fitness and drugstore options within less than a quarter mile of your UNF campus.

Jacksonville Beach Housing

UNF is quite close to Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach, and while it sounds like a great idea to be close to the beach, your wallet may think otherwise! Look inland a little for more affordable houses for rent.

Most of the apartment rentals in Jacksonville close to UNF are available for around $600 to $700, however, there are scattered places for rent for under $500 per month, and plenty over that mark! If you have a car and don't mind driving to school, your housing choices expand considerably, and your weekly budget will breathe a sigh of relief.

Jacksonville Dining Out and Nightlife

While it may be too expensive to locate your apartment close to school, you will certainly want to stay in the area when you're either hungry or thirsty! There is a wide variety of cuisines represented in the UNF area, with Japanese, Mexican, Greek and Mediterranean, Vietnamese, burgers and pizza all represented.

Most of the nightlife is actually day life, with many social activities centered on the beach. Nolan's Sports Grille and Club H20 Office are within easy reach of school, though.
