University of Dallas
There are just over 3,000 students at this Catholic University in Irving, Texas, but it has a big reputation for academic excellence. Undergraduate studies are divided into the college of liberal arts or the college of business, but every student studies a core curriculum that focuses on the history of Western civilization from the classical to modern era.
Irving is a city of around 200,000 people close to Dallas. Within ten years of its inception, it was home to churches, cotton gins, a single blacksmith shop and one general store. Now work opportunities in the city are much more diverse (!), with several large businesses headquartered in Irving. Chuck E Cheese, Kimberley C;lark, and Exxon Mobil all have bases in Irving.
Travelling in Texas
Texas is one of the country's largest, and understandably least walkable, states. The area around the University of Dallas is unfortunately the same - it will be necessary to have a car for any great degree of freedom. DART, Dallas's mass transit system, serves Irving quite well, with reasonable fares but quite a sparse timetable.
Neighborhoods for New Students at University of Dallas
If you prefer to minimize your car use as much as possible, look for apartment rentals in the neighborhoods close by to University of Dallas, including Irving Heights, University Hills, Grauwyler Heights and the Hospital District. Irving Heights and University Hills have the highest proportion of residential areas and also the most affordable housing prices.
True Texan Living in Affordable Apartments
Irving is a little more expensive than some other areas of Texas, but the apartments for rent here are still extremely affordable, with plenty of options in the under $500 per month bracket. One of their best features is not only the price, but the fact that most are located within an easy few-mile distance of the University of Dallas.
Going Out in Irving - Nightlife and Dining
You'll find most of the clubs and pubs are in a little pocket just north of the University of Dallas, and somewhat northeast of the city center. Places like M Bar, Baby Dolls Saloon, and Cowboys Red River are popular, with Webb's Bar and Grill, Stroker's Ice House and XTC Cabaret much closer to school.
When lunchtime rolls around and you just can't stomach a sandwich made at 6am that morning, try Taj Chaat House (you'll need to drive), or San Diego's Tacos, both in the center of town.
