  • Is Charleston a town where I'll need a car to get around?

Charleston has a decent bus system with plenty of stops, and a Dash system downtown which is good for short hops, but for living there all the time, you'll probably need a car unless you an live near shops and close to a bus stop. The downtown area is much better for public transportation than the suburbs.

  • Is Charleston famous for any kind of restaurant or food in particular? What's the local favorite?

As a Southern city on the water, Charleston is known for its seafood and Southern-style cooking. For the former, tourists frequent Hyman's Seafood on South Market Street, although locals prefer Bowen's Island or The Wreck. For the latter, try Melvin's Barbeque or Sticky Fingers. All under the same ownership, the three locations of the Mustard Seed, along with Sette VI, Uno Mas, Long Point Grill, and Boulevard Diner, offer a mid-range dining experience with daily specials.

  • What do people in Charleston do as far as outdoor recreation?

Charleston residents have many options when it comes to outdoor recreation. Located right next to the Atlantic Ocean, swimming, boating, sailing, fishing, and surfing are all popular pastimes in the area. Francis Marion National Forest, located just northeast of Charleston, offers opportunities for hiking, biking, birdwatching, hunting, and camping. Sumter National Forest, located about three hours to the northwest, has many of the same types of activities.
