Texas Southern University
Texas Southern University is one of the oldest historically black universities in the nation - one of the frontiers of racial barriers. Social sciences are among the school's specialties, with the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, as well as a Pharmacy and Health Sciences College, a School of Law, College of Education, College of Science and Technology and a School of Business. The Tavis Smiley School of Communication is the most recently established school in the university.
TSU Location and Districts
Texas Southern University is located quite close to the center of Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States. Some of the US's largest Asian, Latin American and Arab populations live in Houston, and the city's dining and cultural scene is said to be unrivaled in Texas.
You'll be looking for housing and student apartments around Neartown/Montrose, Greater Third Ward, and South Central (which is nothing like the South Central district in LA!). This area is home to a diverse range of cultures, with around half the population Caucasian, 20% Negro and a sizeable proportion of Vietnamese and other Asians.

While car use in Houston is entrenched, the city itself is becoming denser and more easily walkable. The TSU area just south of the city has a walk score of 66 out of 100, with plenty of grocery stores just under half a mile away from school, and bars and pub selections up to a mile away. For a night or lunchtime of tingling tastebuds, though, 13 Celsius is handy to TSU and has a great selection of wines.
