What's a good neighborhood for families in Savannah?
Savannah has so many good neighborhoods but for families, the Southside area is good and it's near great shopping. If your family likes the beach, then Tybee Island wold be fantastic. It isn't commercial out there and has a real community feel to it. Some people love the school systems over in Richmond Hill which is about a twenty minute drive and it's very beautiful out there too.
Does Savannah have any famous museums or exhibitions?
Savannah is home to the Telfair Museum of Art, the South's first public art museum. Opened to the public as an art museum and school by the Telfair family in 1886, it's now composed of three buildings: the original Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences building, the Owens-Thomas House, and the recently completed Jepson Center for the Arts. The last was designed by internationally acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie. Another institution of note in Savannah is the Oatland Island Education Center, which features animals native to this region.
Are there any quiet neighborhoods in Savannah?
Yes. Montgomery is one of Savannah's quieter neighborhoods. With mostly single-family, medium-sized homes, this predominantly owner-occupied neighborhood is located towards the southern edge of Savannah. This neighborhood is also suburban in terms of population density and coastal, both of which may be factors that contribute to its tranquil nature. Another neighborhood that shares many characteristics with Montgomery is Skidaway Island, which is located just to the east.
Will I need a car in Savannah?
Yes, you most likely will need a car in Savannah. In fact, close to 75 percent of Savannah's population drives a private automobile to commute to work on a daily basis, while less than 5 percent uses mass transit for the same purpose. These figures suggest that Savannah's public transportation system leaves a lot to be desired, but there are some options available. Chatham Area Transit provides local bus service throughout the region, and the DOT (Downtown Transportation) system provides free transportation in the Historic District. Amtrak also operates a passenger terminal in Savannah; trains run north to New York City and south to Miami, Florida.
what's a good walking neighborhood for an active young senior.
The Historic District (North and South) is a very walkable neighborhood -- you can easily run your daily errands without relying on a car, and enjoy some lovely scenery to boot, including traditional Southern architecture and historic buildings. Victory Square and the Oglethorpe Mall area also very pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods.
