  • Help--I'm new to Chicago and have no idea where to look for an apartment! Can someone give me the lay of the land?

If you're working in downtown Chicago (also known as the Loop) there are plenty of modern high-rises around to find a convenient apartments. The North Side of the Chicago is where you'll find a ton of apartments along the lake, with some hip new neighborhoods tucked in there too. The South side is south of downtown Chicago and is a bit more spread out, but if you need to be close to the University of Chicago (or any of the South Side's great museums and parks), check out apartments there.

  • How much can I expect to pay in heating bills this winter in a Chicago apartment?

You’ll find that many buildings include heat in the rent amount but if you opt for an apartment in an older building where heat isn’t included, the landlord by law has to provide approximate monthly costs to you. Neighborhoods like Lincoln Park or Lakeview, for instance, have charming older buildings where you’ll pay your own heat bill. Check the cost in advance, and know the gas company has a yearly averaging plan that is super convenient and makes it more affordable to stay toasty.
