Ready for an Apartment near NEIU?
Located in the Chicago neighborhood of North Park, Northeastern Illinois University is home to 12,000 students. Since the school has no resident halls, all students live off campus. The area is fairly walkable and public transportation is excellent.
Since the student population is so ethnically diverse, you can also expect the same of neighborhood restaurants that cater to students. There's Cuban, Asian, Eastern European, and more to choose from. Try Midori's for Japanese and Ken's for Mandarin. There are burger places and other fast food places within easy walking distance of the campus too.
All students commute and whether its a five minute walk or a twenty minute mass transit ride, you'll want to find a couple of neighborhood bars where you can meet friends after class. The Hourglass is one such bar, and the Montrose Saloon combines both sports bar and meeting place. At night, students from all the Chicago area universities head to the North Shore for the many bars and clubs. Tiffins is also a good pick. It combines Indian food and a lively bar.

Help--I'm new to Chicago and have no idea where to look for an apartment! Can someone give me the lay of the land?
If you're working in downtown Chicago (also known as the Loop) there are plenty of modern high-rises around to find a convenient apartments. The North Side of the Chicago is where you'll find a ton of apartments along the lake, with some hip new neighborhoods tucked in there too. The South side is south of downtown Chicago and is a bit more spread out, but if you need to be close to the University of Chicago (or any of the South Side's great museums and parks), check out apartments there.
How much can I expect to pay in heating bills this winter in a Chicago apartment?
You’ll find that many buildings include heat in the rent amount but if you opt for an apartment in an older building where heat isn’t included, the landlord by law has to provide approximate monthly costs to you. Neighborhoods like Lincoln Park or Lakeview, for instance, have charming older buildings where you’ll pay your own heat bill. Check the cost in advance, and know the gas company has a yearly averaging plan that is super convenient and makes it more affordable to stay toasty.
