How is the school system in Monterey?
Although some of Monterey's schools fall under other districts, most of Monterey is served by the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. This district comprises 10 elementary schools, one K-5, one K-8, two middle schools, and four high schools. Rated as better than 38.1 percent of school districts in California and 13.9 percent of school districts in the US, as a whole, the district has not received very high marks. However, there are several private schools in the area, as well as California's school choice program, which allows parents to choose another public school for their child.
Does Monterey have a good school system?
Similar to much of California's education system, Monterey's schools aren't all that great. Education is provided, for the most part, by the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, whose 24 schools serve close to 12,000 pupils. Rated better than 38.1 percent of school districts in California and 13.9 percent of school districts, this school district is subpar by both state and national standards. For these reasons, many parents opt to send their children to the private schools in the area.
