Hollins University Off Campus Apartments

Ready for an Apartment near HU?

Known for its outstanding creative writing program that has produced multiple Pulitzer Prize winners, Hollins University is a private women’s liberal arts college in Roanoke, Virginia, and one of the oldest women’s schools for higher education. Males: look elsewhere for your education (unless you are here for grad school). Hollins started offering co-ed education at the graduate level in 1958, so guys could partake in their prestigious creative writing, teaching, dance, and screenwriting/film studies programs. The low student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1 really improves the education and keeps each student involved with her studies. Hollins offers a great study abroad program, too; about half the student body spends at least a semester abroad.

Housing at Hollins

Living on-campus at Hollins University is required for all students. However, there are exceptions to this rule: if you are from the city of Roanoke itself, have family who live here, or if you’re a returning college student. If you’re married and have a family of your own, Hollins does not require that your husband and your children move into the dorms with you. Your housing roommate would not be thrilled. For the exceptional exceptions, there is still hope. The good news is that Roanoke has many rentals listed on our site, most of which are beautiful (even historic!) single-family houses. These houses are extremely affordable, especially given how much space and charm they have. Read our blog articles on apartment hunting to help you through the process.

Living in Roanoke

Without a car, it can be difficult for Hollins students to explore the area surrounding campus, but the attractions and the natural beauty of the area should keep you from being sequestered at school. Hollis even provides a campus shuttle to take you downtown. For some culture enrichment, visit the Taubman Museum of Art or Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. For toned muscles, there are nearby trails and parks for hiking, rock climbing, and other outdoorsy activities. While the old buildings of Hollins really allow you to immerse yourself in its history, make the most of your college experience and don’t get stuck in the past.
