A number of mistransliterations gave the state of Wisconsin its name. The name of the region was first recorded by a French explorer, who wrote the name down as "Meskousing." Other French explorers later wrote the word as "Ouisconsin," and this word was given English spelling in the 1800''s, giving the state its current spelling. The meaning of the word has also been obscured through history, though it seems that it has something to do with the color red, which is likely a reference to the Wisconsin River, which flows along red sandstone in the Wisconsin Dells. Native American settlers arrived in Wisconsin during the last ice age, when the area was covered by glaciers. It was settled by Americans in the 1800''s and gained statehood in 1848, making it the 30th state in the Union. Though temperatures have warmed significantly since the last ice age, Wisconsin is still home to extremely cold winters. Summers in the state are usually mild, though extremes of over 110 degrees are not unheard of. The capital of Wisconsin, Madison, is a large city and is home to the flagship university of the state''s public university system, the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The largest city and metropolitan area is Milwaukee, which is also home to a number of universities. Residents of Wisconsin support a number of local sports teams, including the football team, the Green Bay Packers, the baseball team, the Milwaukee Brewers and the basketball team, the Milwaukee Bucks. The arts are also strongly supported by residents of Wisconsin, and the state has more country music festivals than any other state in the nation.
