The word Tennessee comes from the Cherokee language, though the meaning has been lost. The Appalachian Mountains run through the eastern portion of the state and the stops in the west at the Mississippi river. The largest city in Tennessee, Memphis is home to a number of large corporations, including FedEx, and International Paper. The state''s capital, Nashville, is known for country music. Memphis is also well known in the music world and is home to Graceland, an estate that belonged to music legend Elvis Presley that is now open to the public as a museum. Sports are popular in Tennessee and there are a number of different teams that make their home in this state. In basketball, there is the Memphis Grizzlies, in football, the Tennessee Titans and in hockey, the Nashville Predators. There are many baseball teams in the state, though no teams in the major league. Because of Tennessee''s role in the War of 1812, the state has been given the nickname the "volunteer state." During this war, many men from Tennessee volunteered to serve, which helped secure a United States victory.
