Located near the geographic center of the United States, Nebraska is situated on the Great Plains which is an extremely fertile part of the country. Nebraska was at one time a part of a region known as the Great American Desert despite its fertile soil. There are a number of universities in Nebraska, including the University of Nebraska system and the private institutions Hastings College and Midland University. Sports are popular, though the state is not currently home to any major league teams. The minor league baseball teams, the Lincoln Saltdogs, located in the state''s capital and the Omaha Storm Chasers, located in the largest metropolitan area in Nebraska, offer sports fans a few teams to follow. Nebraska is also home to minor league teams in other sports, including football and soccer.
