Historically, Massachusetts has been a progressive state. Its capital, Boston, was known as the "cradle of liberty" before the Revolutionary War, and in the years leading up to the Civil War, it was the center for the abolitionist movement. In modern times, Massachusetts was the first state to recognize same-sex marriage, continuing with its tradition of progressive thinking and holding true to its motto, "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty." Massachusetts is one of the most densely populated states, with a landmass of 10,500 square miles and a population of 6.5 million. Currently, education, medicine and technology are the main industries in the state, though it has been a major center for manufacturing in the past, and reliant on agriculture for its early history. Much of Massachusetts is comprised of lowlands and softly rolling hills. Though much of Massachusetts has been developed, there are still some small forests dotted throughout the state. Like other states in the area, Massachusetts experiences hot, humid summers and cool winters made less severe by the Atlantic Ocean. Regions further to the west experience harsher winters. The arts have been an important part of Massachusetts culture for many years, and the state was home to a number of different artistic and literary movements, including the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the DeCordova are two of the many museums located in Massachusetts. There are also many prestigious universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.
