As the appropriately nicknamed "Peach State," Georgia is the number one producer of peaches in the United States. It was the final of the thirteen original colonies and, in 1788, became the fourth state in to enter the Union. During the American Civil War, Georgia seceded, joining with the Southern states and was the last territory to be reinstated once the war was over. Located just north of Florida and bordering the Atlantic Ocean on its Southeast corner, Georgia sees sub-tropical weather much of the year, with lots of rain and humidity during its hot summers. The state''s motto is, "Wisdom, justice and moderation." It balances large areas devoted to farming, including the farming of peaches, peanuts and pine trees that are refined to create turpentine, with large city centers. The cities of Atlanta and Athens are seeing some of the most rapid expansion in the nation and are both home to prestigious universities, with Georgia Technological University in Atlanta and the University of Georgia in Athens. Residents of Georgia, especially those around city centers, have access to a variety of art and music venues, including the Atlanta Opera and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The state also has a long literary history and is the setting for numerous classics, including Gone with the Wind and The Color Purple. Georgia is also home to professional sports teams in many different sports, including the football team the Atlanta Falcons and the baseball team the Atlanta Braves. The Masters, a major tournament in the Professional Golf Association, is also held in Georgia.
