The word Connecticut comes from a Native American word, Quinnehtukqut, which means "beside the long tidal river." Though the state in on the Eastern seaboard, it is located to the north of Long Island and protected from the body of the Atlantic Ocean by this land mass. The quiet waters between Long Island and Connecticut made this state valuable for its ports by its early settlers. This region was one of the first to be settled by Europeans crossing the Atlantic and is also one of the oldest states in the Union, having been admitted in 1788. The landscape of this state consists of rolling hills flat areas dotted with forest. Temperatures see quite a range and snowfall is relatively heavy in the winter. The education system in Connecticut is well known through the names of some of its prestigious schools, such as Yale University, Trinity College and the University of Connecticut in Storrs. The emphasis on education in this state and the long history of its educational institutions has led to a relatively highly educated community and the one of the highest per capita incomes in the country. Financial institutions are prevalent in Connecticut, as are jobs in the field of education. Despite the high income of some of the residents of Connecticut, there are also areas in the state that have some of the lowest per capita income in the nation, leading to a large divide between rich and poor in this state. Residents of Connecticut have plenty to do in the state, with lots of outdoor activities and sports when the weather is nice and art, music and theatrical events when the temperature becomes too inhospitable to remain outdoors. The state is home to two American Hockey League teams, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the Connecticut Whale as well as various baseball, rugby and football teams.
