Alaska''s motto, "North to the Future," suits this state well. With much of its land mass north of the Arctic Circle, and a distance of 1500 miles between the southernmost tip of the state and the northernmost part of Washington, Alaska is just about as north as you can get. Alaska is truly "The Land of the Midnight Sun," as northern parts of the state do not see a sunset for much of the summer. Of course, that means the opposite is true in the winter, where these same regions see nearly three months of darkness, illuminated often by the aurora borealis, the beautiful light display in the sky caused by the magnetic field around the Earth. Southern regions of the state see long days and nights as well, but do not experience the extremes that the northern regions see. The word Alaska itself comes from an Aleut word which means "great land" or "that which the sea breaks against." And break against Alaska the sea does. With over 33,900 miles of shoreline Alaska has nearly three times more shore than the rest of the states put together. It was the 49th state to enter the union, after it was purchased from Russia in 1959, and continues to have one of the lowest populations in the nation, despite the fact that it is the largest state by area. The low population of Alaska has led the state government to offer a number of perks to Alaskan residents, including stipends and tax credits. In the winter, Alaska is home to the Iditarod dog sled race, a sporting event that challenges participants to drive a dog team 1112 miles across the frozen landscape. There are many outdoor activities enjoyed by Alaskans in all seasons, and the state offers spectacular hiking, fishing, wildlife interactions and some of the most striking vistas in the country. The tallest mountain in the United States, Mt. McKinley, at 20,320 ft. is located in this state, as are about 70 active volcanoes.
