The History of Webster
Founded in 1879 by James W. Webster, the town of Webster was initially referred to as "Gardentown" for its prominent farming industry. Originally a colony established for English settlers, early residents made a living raising pears and other produce. In the early 1900s, dairies and livestock ranches developed, railroads were built throughout town, and early Webster became the rice industry of the gulf coast.
The town was incorporated in 1958. In 1961, the Johnson Space Center was built along the shores of nearby Clear Lake, which sparked a period of growth and development within Webster. Today, Webster, Texas is a thriving bedroom community with close ties to the Clear Lake area and the high tech industry.
