Town of Titans

Titusville, Pennsylvania, is known as the Birthplace of the Oil Industry; the drills and rigs are long gone now but they left quite a mark on the town, which continues to celebrate its slippery, oil-covered history with museums and parks. Apartment renters who are hoping to move to a small, laid back town will find just what they’re looking for in Titusville. There are only around 5,600 people who live here, making it easy for renters to get to know each and every one of their neighbors. The people here are friendly, but they won’t come banging down your door with party invitations every day of the week, so renters who like their privacy and plenty of peace and quiet will get on well in this town.

There’s Oil in Them Thar Hills

Back before Americans even understood the potential power of petroleum products, the land around Titusville was coveted for its rich store of oil. In the 1850s, with the discovery of a practical way to extract enough oil from the ground to be able to make a profit, this sleepy little town became the site of the first ever Oil Rush. Though oil was only used medicinally at the time (a prescription that modern doctors would certainly frown on today), it was believe that with a large enough source, it could be refined and used to provide light in oil lamps (the gasoline-powered automobile was still decades away). People flocked to the area to drill, in the hopes of striking it rich. After the first oil millionaire-oil-tycoon was created, it wasn’t long before millionaires started popping up all over Titusville. Nowadays, most of the millionaires and all of the oil have gone the way of the dinosaurs that made that oil possible in the first place, and life in Titusville has settled back to its quiet country ways. Renters should be sure to pay a visit to the Drake Well Museum to learn a little more about the rich history of the area, and the riches that used to pour out of it.

An Oily Forest

A hundred and fifty years ago, a visit to the forests around Titusville meant a stroll through heavy machinery, haphazardly downed trees, and generally wrecked wilderness. In their haste to be the first to dig a well of black gold, early prospectors tore up the earth. Time heals much in nature, however, and a visit to Oil Creek State Park is no longer a walk through a wasteland. In fact, this forest has recovered quite well, and many native plants and animals have returned to the area. Visitors to the park can explore miles of trails, canoe through the rivers and streams, and backpack into the back country or pitch a tent in a well-maintained campsite. While walking through the woods, don’t be surprised if you run into old equipment left to rust in the trees. When the oil finally dried up, the oil rushers were quick to get out of town in search of richer land.

Meeting the Neighbors

It may be a small town but there’s still plenty to do in Titusville. Renters will need to check the town’s calendar frequently so that they don’t miss out on any of the fun. Titusville frequently hosts group get-togethers that help newcomers meet some friends and longtime residents stay connected to their neighbors. Since it is such a small town, renters should take the initiative if they'd like to form their own group or plan an event. The The Titusville Herald, the town's newspaper, is a great resource if you’d like to find out what's happening in town.
