Surprise, You're In For A Heat Treat

This Maricopa County, Arizona city nestled warmly within the Phoenix metropolitan area can't boast of a great story behind its name. To make a long story short, the city's founder claimed to be surprised if the place ever amounted to much. So although this Grand Canyon State can't look back to an abundance of well-wishes at its inception (even from its first official representative) it's in fact one of the fastest growing Phoenix suburbs, so it just may have the last laugh after all.

Sur-Prices You Should Know About

Surprise, though not a major city, harbors a plethora of rental options, one of which is sure to tickle your proverbial fancy. To get an idea of what a place in Alliance will run you, consider taking a closer look at the above rental trends table. That is where you can find side-by-side comparisons of the average monthly costs for one, two, and three bedroom apartments. All at a glance. Now get jumpin' on your apartment hunt by clicking on the Surprise rentals listed below. We know how funny that sounds, but just bear with us and have fun looking for that perfect place.

Surprise: You Learn Something New Every Day

Surprise turned 50 years old in 2010, and in so doing inspired a coffee table style commemorative book complete with a DVD. Now this example of patting one's self on the back may or may not be warranted, but nobody can accuse this Arizona locale of lacking self-esteem, that's for sure. Anyway, within this tidy and handsomely packaged collection of words you'll learn that this is actually one of the state's ""premiere"" cities, having grown from a small farming community specializing in cotton to a rapidly expanding Phoenix suburb and all around swell place to be.

Surprise can thank (no surprise here) the Surprise Historical Society for helping get this whole 50 year celebration and brouhaha underway. And you can thank them for the complete and illustrated introduction to the city's first police chief, Ron Hornsby. He's of no relation to Bruce Hornsby, just in case you're wondering.

Like many cities in the current era, Surprise likes to tout the results of scientifically sound surveys of its citizens on their quality of life. You know, as a way to be ""objective"" about what a great place this is to move to, rent an apartment in, and live life to the fullest. Their findings? Well, residents here found the city to be a ""good"" or ""excellent"" place to shack up 87% of the time. Not bad. But as for civic engagement, well, it could use a little work. Only 21% of folks had attended a city council meeting or the like in the previous year, but on the other hand nearly everyone had helped out a neighbor in one way or another, so it isn't like residents are a bunch of hermetically sealed shut-ins.

The city is almost, somewhat, sort of defined by the presence of the massive housing community known as Sun City Grand, a kind of regional headquarters for retirees. (The Miami area would be another regional headquarters, say, for the Southeast portion of the U.S.) Sun City Grand has helped push the population figure up, up, and away in recent years, to the point where the head count is now easily in the six figures. Adding yourself won't make much of a difference mathematically, but could make all the difference in the world in the way that matters most.

Surprise! You're Good To Go

Fan of baseball? Then know that the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers make their spring training grounds here. According to the folks here: ""The Cactus League Spring Training facility and stadium, along with a regional library, aquatic center, recreation center, and 57-acre passive park are the centerpieces of new square-mile-plus downtown development, putting Surprise well on its way to becoming the playground of the West Valley."" Sounds pretty fun to us, but just be careful to avoid heat exhaustion.

As for the more common recreational forms of play, you know, those that have nothing do with the big leagues, you'll find plenty of those here too. Youth sports, adult sports, teen sports, and even the cutting edge concept of ""adaptive sports,"" all have a presence here. That means that if you can't find something to do sports-wise, well, at the very least you can't blame your age or your physical condition.

Come to think of it, that doesn't leave much left by way of excuses, now does it? Maybe your apartment is just so wonderful, you never want to leave?
