Located on the banks of the historic Delaware and Raritan (D&R) Canal, the Blackwells Mills Canal House is a historic landmark located near the Somerset area of Franklin Township. The D&R Canal was built in the 1830s as a way of connecting the Delaware and Raritan rivers, making travel throughout the region much easier. The Blackwells Mills Canal House was built around the same time as the canal itself. Today, the house serves as a museum and library, which makes a nice historic accompaniment to the canal, now a New Jersey State Park and recognized historic site.
