Early Shippensburg

Shippensburg was settled by Scotch and Irish families in the 1730s. The town served as a western outpost until the Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania was established in 1871. Today, it lies 40 miles southwest of the Pennsylvania state capitol, Harrisburg. The city boasts a modest population of 5,500 people. The community is gorgeous and established with large trees and rolling, open fields. Queen Anne architecture is found throughout town, retouched, renovated and vibrantly colored. Two stores, The Beistle Company and Pague and Fegan, are the oldest decoration and hardware stores in the state, respectively.

Shippensburg Today

Shippensburg may be a small community, but there is certainly a variety of options when choosing a place to live. Many available apartments are near the Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania in the north part of town, but there are also apartments available closer to downtown. Primary and secondary education is provided by the Shippensburg Area School District. There are several parks perfect for taking the kids to play, walking the dog, or getting involved in community sports.

Things to Do

Each August, the town welcomes nearly 70,000 visitors for the Corn Festival where more than 300 vendors sell food, art, crafts, and antiques all along the main streets in downtown. There's entertainment for the whole family and it's especially popular with kids. There is also the Shippensburg Fair in late July of each year at the city's fairgrounds. Like the Corn Festival, there's food, art, and crafts, plus the Fair Queen Pageant, rides and games, horse shows, and a demolition derby.

Education and Entertainment

The Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania has remained at the heart of the town since its inception as a prep school for teachers. Today, with nearly 7,000 students enrolled, the focus of education has expanded to include over 50 degree programs ranging from biology and chemistry to business and marketing in both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The school drives Shippensburg's arts, culture, and entertainment with musical and theatrical productions at the Luhrs Performing Arts Center and SU Raiders athletics. The Raiders compete in NCAA Division II with football, basketball, and baseball programs being the most popular. The Raiders have produced several football talents who have gone on to continue their careers in the NFL.
