Sanford in the 20th C
Sanford was incorporated in 1877 with a population of just over 100 people, but some of the most interesting parts of the city's history took place in the 20th century, starting with the city becoming the Seminole county seat in 1913. The year 1942 saw the establishment of Naval Air Station Sanford, which was home to over 1,500 enlisted men and 350 officers at the height of its operation. The year 1971 saw the opening of Walt Disney World in nearby Orlando, leading to a massive influx of tourism in the area that allowed the city to grow and develop quicker than ever.
City Parks and Events
Apart from initiatives such as RiverWalk, Sanford has much to offer in the way of natural beauty and outdoor enjoyment. Wherever you are in the city, chances are you are not far from one of the city's many public parks, as you have 29 to choose from. Many of the city's parks are home to Sanford's outdoor festivities, such as the Celery City Cruisers event held along the RiverWalk trail. The Sanford Farmers Market can be found outside every Saturday in Magnolia Square. Annual outdoor holiday events are also the norm, including the Christmas in the Square and Annual Tree Lighting event held every December.
