What’s Up, Saint Joseph?
Saint Joseph is a small city, relatively speaking, with only about 10,000 souls. But Saint Joseph makes up for this quaintness (if it even needs to) by its proximity to Chicago, Indianapolis, and of course, Detroit. Saint Joseph, belonging to Berrien County, can also be yours.
Who said little places can't have big importance? (Maybe no one? Hey, allow us some rhetorical flair here.) In the case of Saint Joseph, it happens to be the home to the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. If that sounds like a broad group of professionals, well that's exactly what it is. It includes both the famed Temple Grandin and...well, we can't think of anyone else just now, but maybe you can. With an acronym like ASABE, we're sure the group’s members get accused of harboring some secret penchant for Japanese cuisine. But alas, that's not their official shtick. So… undue speculation is not encouraged.
Saint Joseph makes no bones about its firm belief in the city being a community. We don’t mean merely a collection of stop signs and cross walks, or say… iced over lighthouses. yikes! As Saint Joseph puts it:
Those in our community share in a vision for our future and participate in making that vision a reality. That's why we're all proud to call St. Joseph our home.
Touching, right? And it ain't just a bunch of hot air. The town relies on the volunteer efforts as mobilized by the Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan to do everything from feed the hungry to mentoring youth. And that's just in January.
Saint Joseph can make a minor claim to fame for being the setting for the memoir-turned-scandal, A Million Little Pieces. You remember this bit of drama, right? The book and its author, James Frey, were hyped on Oprah, only to later suffer from the revelation that its supposed non-fictional qualities were quite the opposite. In other words it was completely made up. Yeah. Ouch. Not that anyone's holding that particular episode against Saint Joseph. In fact, the city comes out on top only gaining a big chunk of attention. Not too shabby.
Saint Joseph's Got It Goings On
Whether it's lodging, shopping, dining, and even the generic and catch all category of Things To Do, Saint Joseph scores big. Fancy a fancy steak? Try the Pump House Grille, which, contrary to its namesake, absolutely won't put you in a position to have your stomach pumped. Indeed, you'll want to keep that blissful full feeling once you've downed their Texas Beef Brisket or Mushroom Swiss Burger. And lucky for you, they're open seven days a week.
Did you know even Michigan's got a wine industry? It’s true! Winery tours are available at places like the Karma Vista, Tabor Hill, and Round Barn wineries.
