A Tree City Worthy of its Name

Royal Oak was named in 1819 after an English surveyor spotted a tree in southeast Michigan that bore a striking resemblance to the royal oak tree in his homeland where King Charles II took cover while fleeing Oliver Cromwell's army. Today, the site of the town's name-sake tree lies just off Main Street. It's apt that the name stuck; settlers flocked to the area because of the thick canopy of oak, maple, and elm. City officials acquired acorns from English trees traced back to the Royal Oak, and planted them in the Detroit Zoo in the 1930s. Many of those trees have been moved to Memorial Park.
