A Tree City Worthy of its Name
Royal Oak was named in 1819 after an English surveyor spotted a tree in southeast Michigan that bore a striking resemblance to the royal oak tree in his homeland where King Charles II took cover while fleeing Oliver Cromwell's army. Today, the site of the town's name-sake tree lies just off Main Street. It's apt that the name stuck; settlers flocked to the area because of the thick canopy of oak, maple, and elm. That one Royal Oak that concealed the King some 400 years ago in England has helped bring shade to Michigan. City officials acquired acorns from English trees traced back to the Royal Oak, and planted them in the Detroit Zoo in the 1930s. Many of those trees have been moved to Memorial Park. Trees have played an important role in the city's history. Many were cut down when the area's lumber area was at its peak, but careful community planning and strong efforts to replant trees has helped to maintain the reputation as a green, wooded town; it is a Tree City USA community, as distinguished by the Arbor Day Foundation.
Life in Royal Oaks
There are many different kinds of apartments available in this green Detroit suburb of 60,000. While most of the town is residential, it also boasts a distinct and growing downtown community, giving you the option of living away from it all or close to the town's famed entertainment and nightlife attractions. A highlight of that nightlife is Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle where a young Tim Allen got his start. With its low crime rate, Royal Oak is a great place to live and raise a family. Public education is provided by the Royal Oak Neighborhood Schools which operates nine locations. It also houses a location of Oakland Community College. It is considered a film-friendly town and scenes in Tim Allen's popular ‘90s sitcom Home Improvement were filmed here, as were parts of major motion pictures Gran Torino and Red Dawn.
A Short Drive Down I-75
Downtown Detroit is just fifteen miles away, meaning you get to enjoy being close to all the amenities a big city can offer, yet you're far enough away to be off the beaten path. A quick trip into the Motor City and you can be at an NHL, NFL, MLB, or NBA game, enjoying the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Motown Historical Museum, or spending the day with the kids at the Detroit Zoo. Eastern Michigan has so much to offer, and it's all at your fingertips from your new apartment in Royal Oaks!
