For the Republic

As any Civil War history buff worth their salt will tell you, Republic was the site of the first battle west of the Mississippi River. The Wilson's Creek battlefield is still in good condition today and is open to the public. Visitors to the battlefield can learn all about the history of the war at the museum (on site) or see history unfold before their eyes as costumed soldiers replay the action of the battle. This particular battle went to the South, though the victorious army failed to prevent the advance of Northern troops for very long.

Party with the Neighborhood

At least once a month, the people of Republic get together to celebrate life in their town. Newcomers can get to know their neighbors at the May Day five kilometer run, free concerts in the park, or at a Springfield Cardinals baseball game. Kids will also be able to hunt for Easter eggs (and maybe even meet the Easter Bunny in person), beg for Halloween candy from the shops downtown, and join in the fun at the huge Fourth of July celebration held each year. Getting the whole town together is one of the many ways that Republic works to foster a strong sense of community.

Celebrating the Arts

Though there are a few places for artistic renters to visit within the town of Republic, a quick drive into Springfield will put renters face to face with all the arts they could ever hope to enjoy. On the First Friday of every month, the artistic types in Springfield open up their studios, set up their bands on street corners, and perform free for the crowd downtown. Renters who like to stroll around and look at artwork can also enjoy taking a walking tour of the art in the city or heading indoors to a number of different fine art museums. Quite a few theaters can also be found in town, giving renters the opportunity to see live theatrical productions, comedy shows, concerts, and even the occasional ballet performance. With so much art and culture to enjoy in town, the only trouble will be deciding which shows to see first.

Play Ball!

Though there aren't any major league teams around Republic, sports fans won't have to miss out on their favorite games when they move into town. The Springfield Cardinals, a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals on the other side of the state, keep the game going throughout the spring and summer. Renters who'd prefer to play on the field rather than sit on the sidelines and watch, can sign up for a number of different sports through the town’s Parks and Recreation Department. The city organizes sports for kids, teens, and adults, making it easy for newcomers of all ages to get outside, enjoy the sunshine, and meet some new friends.
