Palo Alto, California
As one of the econmic focal points in the Silicon Valley, Palo Alto is an upscale city of just over 61,000 people. Also home to Stanford University as well as over 6,000 high tech businesses, Palo Alto is upscale and vibrant. Know when starting the search for your Palo Alto apartment that there is excellent CalTrain service as well as very good bus service as well as being a fairly walkable city. Also know that while parking in the downtown area is free of meters, it may be hard to find a parking place during the week.
Carry A Tall Stick
That Palo Alto means ‘tall stick' in Spanish is reflected by an ancient redwood tree at the north end of the city. The tree is over one thousand years old and the 90" base is something you must see at least once. The area is great for outdoor recreation. There are loads of biking and hiking trails which are used as much for commuting as for recreational purposes. Culturally, much revolves around Stanford University which has major venues for concerts and theatre. Also, checkout Packard's Garage. It is now a museum but is where Hewlett Packard and the Silicon Valley were born.
Dining with the Greeks
Restaurants and cuisines are diverse in the city, and once settled into your Palo Alto apartment, you'll want to get out and explore some of the local favorites. Evvia Estiatorio is everyone's favorite Greek place where the atmosphere is rustic and inviting and the food is excellent. Pampas is one of several very good Brazilian places, and don't pass up a trip to La Bodeguita Del Medio for Cuban either. For more American dishes, check out University Coffee Cafe or St. Michael's Alley. Both are very highly rated. Of course, you'll find ones closer to home but you have to start somewhere!
Under the Disco Ball
At night, wine bars are very popular in Palo Alto. Start with Vin, Vino, Wine or The Wine Room. Both are popular and will give you a feel for the vibe. Antonio's and Dan Brown's are both dive style bars, and Antonio's is a particular favorite with locals. Besides, they have free peanuts! Miyake is an 80s style disco that is as popular with the Stanford crowd as with the locals. Expect a disco ball to be turning! Your Palo Alto apartment is going to be great for exploring this exciting, diverse California town.
