Zydeco Festival

You have not heard Southern music until you hear the esoteric and enchanting blend of Cajun, rhythm, and blues music that is Zydeco. This popular style of music in Louisiana stems from its French origins, and Opelousas not only embraces it with their heritage, but also claims that it has its roots there. They throw a Zydeco Festival every year with live musicians from all around the world to help keep the genre alive, and their efforts have been noticed. Opelousas is now considered to be the Zydeco capital of the world, and the king of the genre calls it home as well.

Evangeline Downs

If you are looking for a little action and a lot of fun, Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino is the place to go. Just east of Opelousas, this massive track and gaming facility is home to close to 1,000 horse stalls, a huge gambling floor, and has some great restaurants and bars on the property as well. Go for the weekend or just a night and try your luck betting on some horses or just playing some slots with the regulars. No matter what you end up doing, the odds are good, and the drinks are cheap, which makes it ideal for a good time.
