Spring into Ocean Springs
As you would imagine, Ocean Springs is a beautiful city. There are quite a few parks, playgrounds, and open spaces in town, many of which have sweeping views of the bay. If you’re looking for an excuse to get out and about in all that fresh air, you have one. The Gulf Islands National Seashore, which stretches all the way into Florida, is one of the most popular parks around. Here, you can enjoy fishing, picnicking, swimming, boating, birding, and camping. This place will keep you busy; you can even take a trip back in time at the Fort Barrancas Visitor Center and the Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center.
If you’re hoping to get out on the greens to play a round of golf, check out the Gulf Hills Golf Club. This 18-hole course is a real knockout (and we don’t mean the kind of knockout that happens when you forget to shout, “Fore!”). Golf Digest called the 17th hole one of the 5 most beautiful and challenging holes in the Southeast. Not too shabby.
The Ocean Springs Parks and Recreation Department offers many activities, programs, camps, and classes that are sure to keep everyone in the family busy. From organized sports and pottery classes to after school programs and summer camps, everyone in your clan will be able to find something to float their boat.
Ocean Springs into the Arts
Ocean Springs is a community that’s big on the arts. The Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center is the organization responsible for keeping the arts alive and well in this art-loving city. This center, which also serves as a school, is in a historic building from the 1920s. Music, photography, ceramics, and theater: there’s a great variety of art at the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center. For even more art, visit the Walter Anderson Museum of Art. This museum, which features both permanent and temporary exhibits, is named for a famous painter who lived and worked in Ocean Springs. Shearwater Pottery was founded by the Anderson family as well. Here, you can check out the workshop, annex, showroom, and many original and unique works. If you really can’t get enough of the arts, there are also quite a few art galleries in the historic downtown area.
