Northridge, California
Northridge is a suburb of Los Angeles and is situated due north of Santa Monica. It has a population of 69,000 and is largely considered residential. Originally a train stop named North Los Angeles, it changed its name in 1938, some 15 years after annexing to the city of Los Angeles. As you start the hunt for your Northridge apartment, understand that while there is bus service to Los Angeles, you will need a car. The city is 17 square miles in size which makes it car dependent.
Fashionista Shopping
Since it is primarily residential, Northridge depends on surrounding towns for cultural venues, and with proximity to Los Angeles proper, Santa Monica and other towns, you are still close to museums, music halls and other performing arts venues. In Northridge, expect to find good shopping at places like the Fashion Mall, which is huge. The Bianchi Planetarium is an excellent local place to visit, and you'll find places for outdoor pursuits like the Northridge Park, where you'll find all sorts of facilities. Nearby is the Sepulveda Dam and Recreational Area where you'll find plenty of running and biking trails too.
Burgers from the Past
Once settled in your Northridge apartment, you'll want to get out and discover the restaurants in town. You'll find every chain restaurant that there is as well as more locally owned establishments. Brent's Deli is a local top pick, and it is much more than a deli. It's full restaurant with ample portions of great food. Falafel Palace is one of those wonderful mom and pop places who serve up excellent food. It's Greek and it's good! King's Burgers is like a blast from the past with fantastic burgers. El Lindo Mexicano not only serves homemade Mexican food but it is open 24 hours a day too.
British Outpost
At night, one of the favorite sports bars is Harper's where you'll not only find the tvs going but many nights, they have live music too. Lee's 4 Cocktails has a great vibe and a great jukebox too. Buchanan's is a British pub with some of the best U.K. type fare in the Valley to have with your beer. Of course, with all the huge, hot clubs all over Los Angeles, you'll find that your Northridge apartment is a great springboard from which to discover some fantastic new places!

How is the nightlife in Northridge?
There are local pubs and good bars in Northridge, but there's not a huge nightlife there. Even the Cal State Northridge students head into L.A. for clubs. There are plenty of places on Ventura Boulevard worth checking out though, and that's only a twenty minute drive.

Is Northridge a town where I'll need a car to get around?
Probably. Like most of Southern California, especially neighborhoods within the Los Angeles area, the public transportation system in Northridge leaves a lot to be desired. There are two Metro Red Line stations in the Valley, and both have a fair amount of connections to/from them. DASH Downtown, LA's bus transit system, also has multiple stops in Northridge, but multiple transfers and wait times could make any trip take a long time. DASH Northridge operates Monday through Saturday.
