Green Acres Park
Beautiful Green Acres Park is a great place for families to enjoy all of New Jersey's seasons. You will find a popular playground on this site with equipment that is appropriate for both older and younger kids, including slides, swings, and play equipment shaped like dinosaurs. For those without kids, outdoor basketball courts, picnic areas, and idyllic walking trails offer North Plainfield residents the opportunity to get outside and move around. This park is also the home site of North Plainfield's annual fishing derby, which makes use of the park's fishing pond to give residents the opportunity for some friendly fishing competition.
Street Fair and Chili
One event that unites this community is the annual Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off. The event, which draws crowds in the thousands, typically takes place on a Saturday during the summer. The Chili Cook-Off, which is hosted by the local Lions Club, may not be the first thing one might associate with New Jersey, but it is nonetheless a favorite staple of this community event. In addition to the Chili Cook-Off, the North Plainfield Street Fair features live music concerts, food (in addition to chili), and performances from a wide variety of street performers.
North Plainfield's history can be experienced up close and personal through a visit to the Vermeule Mansion. This once-private home was built in the mid-1800s and has architectural elements from the Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, and Second Empire styles. Volunteers dressed in period costume lead tours of the facility to teach visitors about the property's former owners. In addition to serving as a historic site, the Vermeule Mansion is home to the Fleetwood Museum of Art and Photographica in addition to an extensive collection of vintage and antique music boxes, making this a great one-stop location for many kinds of cultural immersion.
