Mount Airy is believed to be the inspiration for the fictional town of Mayberry, setting of “The Andy Griffith Show.” Andy Griffith, the show’s star, was born in Mount Airy. Every year, the city holds a “Mayberry Days” celebration in honor of the show, which draws thousands of spectators. The city has a barbershop named “Floyd’s” after the famous Mayberry town barber. Mount Airy is also home to the Andy Griffith Museum, located near Griffith’s historic childhood home. Fans of the show, as well as TV buffs, love this charming museum, home to the biggest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia in the world.
Making Lasting Music
Mount Airy and bluegrass music go hand-in-hand, and have been together for decades. Hundreds of old-time musicians from around the world come to the city each year for the Mount Airy Fiddlers Convention. This event brings the lively, joyful sounds of old-time music to life as fiddle fans clap their hands and stomp their feet to the tunes. The Andy Griffith Playhouse is home to weekly bluegrass sessions and always draws in plenty of fans. If you want even more music, the nearby Blue Ridge Music Center has an amphitheater for live performances of more toe-tapping songs, as well as an old-timey music museum.
