Historic Significance

The Civil War left an indelible mark on the entire State of Georgia, but the history of that war is particularly significant in Milledgeville, which served as the state capital during the antebellum period and through 1868. As the capital of Georgia, Milledgeville was the site of the state's decision to secede from the U.S. and join the Confederacy. Milledgeville also felt the force of the South's eventual defeat, with General Sherman's troops ransacking and vandalizing the city in 1864. Today, evidence of this period in the city's history, including the historic Governor's Mansion, still stands.

Local Colleges and Un

There are a few institutions of higher learning in the Milledgeville area, making this town a destination for college students from across the state. The public Central Georgia Technical College is a community college that offers two-year degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Another public school in the area that may be suitable for those who do not want a four-year degree is the Georgia Military College, a junior college that is part of the U.S. Army's Early Commissioning Program. Four-year degrees are available in the area through the public Georgia College & State University, which is known as "Georgia's Public Liberal Arts University".

Bartram Educational F

The forests in the Milledgeville area are beautiful examples of the region's mixed deciduous and evergreen landscape. Visitors and locals alike can immerse themselves in this natural beauty at the Bartram Educational Forest, a State Forest facility that has a special focus on education. Instead of simply offering trails, this park has trails that are accompanied by educational kiosks, helping visitors learn as they go. Additionally, the forest has facilities for camping, though campers must make arrangements prior to spending the night. Bartram Forest covers more than 2,000 acres of densely wooded land, making it a great spot for bird watching.
