Permian Basin

<p>Midland is the important administrative center for the petroleum-producing region known as the "Permian Basin". Roughly 20 percent of the United States' oil and gas reserves are located in reservoirs just south of Midland. It is a major source of money and jobs for Midland and Odessa residents. In addition to its petroleum significance, Permian Basin has one of the world's thickest deposits of rocks from 200 to 250 million years ago.</p>

Higher Education

<p>Midland is within a 100-mile reach of eight universities, colleges and junior colleges. Midland College is one of only three community colleges in the state, offering more than 50 programs and serving over six thousand students a year. The University of Texas at the Permian Basin is located in nearby Odessa and offers nationally accredited programs in business, education, visual arts and social work.</p>
