Don’t Miss Middleton
Why? Because Middleton, Wisconsin, is considered to be one of the best places to live in the United States, according to CNN, anyway. That particular prize was awarded back in 2009, sure, but this kind of acclaim doesn't fade quickly. Middleton has a strong economy and a number notable companies are headquartered here, including The American Girl (you know, those dolls), Capital Brewery, and Electronic Theatre Controls. There are a few celebrities in town as well, including journalist, Ed Janus and basketball coach, Gary Close.

Middleton Basics
Known as "The Good Neighbor City," Middleton is there. Oh wait, that's these guys. In any case, this suburb of Madison has garnered accolades for its great quality of life from the likes of CNN's Money Magazine. That's no small shakes.
So what exactly did Middleton (which was known as "Middletown" until a case of human error changed the city’s name) do to earn such praise? Well, it has a low unemployment rate (5.9%), an above average reading test score, a strong air quality index, and a low personal crime rate of 1 per 1,000 residents. Oh yes, and a median commute time of only 16 minutes. Dig through the rest of Middleton's quality stats here.
In Middleton, Money Stays Put and Carbon Footprints Stay Small
In an economy with unstable industry everywhere you look, Middleton's relative security can be attributed to stable government and university jobs. Since most people who live here aren’t struggling to make ends meet, the area's boutique shops, excellent eateries, and smorgasbord of small businesses are all doing well.
Middleton's no deviant when it comes sustainable practices. In fact it's perfectly in line with what you'd expect of a suburb of Madison. The city's Sustainability Committee meets frequently and chimes in on everything, including waste disposal, energy use, transportation, and "fair trade" business dealings. This committee sets the standard for what the town considers to be environmentally sound, "best practices."
Making the Most of Middleton
Since Middleton is a neighbor—and a good neighbor, at that—of Madison, there's plenty to do here. If shopping is your thing, head over to Greenway Station. The town’s "outstanding mix of restaurants and retailers" will have you spending money with a minimum of regret. Speaking of outstanding restaurants, you’ll want to be sure to visit the Capital Brewery. Now that's something to write home about! (But only if you can manage to put pen to paper after four pints) This awesome locale has a bier garten and an impressive variety of beers, including seasonals like Oktoberfest and Winter Skal. Middleton's also home to the National Mustard Museum, though we’re pretty sure you wouldn't want to sample the antique mustard.
Of course the University of Wisconsin at Madison should need no introduction, but we'll link to one anyway for the less academic among you.
We dare you not to enjoy Middleton. Go ahead, make our day.
