Access to the waterfront is a cinch thanks to Cow Meadow Park, a combined park and nature preserve right on the bay. The preserve section of the park protects more than 150 acres of salt marsh, mud flat, and other native wetland habitats. The entire habitat, in turn, protects hundreds of bird species and mammals to boot, making the area a great place to bird watch from the preserve's nature trail. The park's basketball, tennis, and handball courts offer a more active diversion. For the kids, there is a large playground and picnic spaces where the whole family can have a meal together.
Merrick locals are assured of a great education thanks to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, a combined district that serves the city of Merrick, among others. The district is known for its academically motivated student population, which is due to both the initiative of Merrick's students and the high caliber of the district's teachers. Scholar-athletes in the district rarely fail to win recognition of that role due to their high marks in class. The schools of the district often place students in prestigious competitions like the Intel Science Talent Search or the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest.
