Year-Round Outdoor Fu

For hiking and biking, few places in Mentor beat Mentor Lagoon’s Nature Preserve. There are more than three miles of trails, each providing a different terrain view. You can also take a water trail and paddle your way to some scenic splendor. Get in some golf practice at the Black Brook Golf Center and find a friend with which to hit the greens. Summer means sand and hot fun in the sun, and Headlands Beach State Park is the perfect place for that. Enjoy fishing, swimming, and hiking in warm weather. When it turns cold, this winter wonderland has sledding and skiing.

President Garfield's

In 1876, James A. Garfield bought a home in the (then) tiny town of Mentor. That home was where he would begin his front porch campaign for the presidency. This practice of staying home to make speeches to supporters had never paid off before, but it did for Garfield in 1880. He became the 20th President of the United States. The home befell some hard times throughout the years. Fortunately, it was restored to much of its former glory in 1998, and along with the land is now known as the James A. Garfield National Historic Site.
