In 1876, James A. Garfield bought a home in the (then) tiny town of Mentor. That home was where he would begin his front porch campaign for the presidency. This practice of staying home to make speeches to supporters had never paid off before, but it did for Garfield in 1880. He became the 20th President of the United States. The home befell some hard times throughout the years. Fortunately, it was restored to much of its former glory in 1998, and along with the land is now known as the James A. Garfield National Historic Site.
