The fight for women's suffrage saw a major breakthrough right in Lombard. April 6, 1891 was a historic day for not only Lombard, but for women throughout the entire nation, when Ellen Martin led a group of women to the polling place at the general store. When she demanded that they be allowed to vote, the men nearly fainted, not knowing what to do. The choice went to a county judge, who ruled that the women did have the right to vote. Thus Ellen Martin of Lombard became the very first woman to vote in the state of Illinois.
