The Wampum Lake Woods Forest Preserve is a 375-acre oasis of green space and wildlife in an otherwise heavily developed region. The area has been targeted by various kinds of industry and development over its history, but community support and legislation have kept the area wooded and scenic. In fact, the lake itself was created by the removal of tons of Earth for fill during the construction of I-294, which left a big hole that filled with water and attracted migratory birds and fish. The site features a network of trails ideal for a stroll, some birding, or even cross country skiing during the winter months.
