The Wampum Lake Woods
The Wampum Lake Woods Forest Preserve is a 375-acre oasis of green space and wildlife in an otherwise heavily developed region. The area has been targeted by various kinds of industry and development over its history, but community support and legislation have kept the area wooded and scenic. In fact, the lake itself was created by the removal of tons of Earth for fill during the construction of I-294, which left a big hole that filled with water and attracted migratory birds and fish. The site features a network of trails ideal for a stroll, some birding, or even cross country skiing during the winter months.
The LOOP! (Lansing Over Night On Pedals) is a unique annual biking event designed to promote cycling in the city, public health, and just plain fun. Held during the summer, riders meet at 8 pm, just as the day begins to cool, and embark on an epic all night guided ride around the city checking out points of historical and contemporary interest along the way. In the past, the event has attracted over 300 brave riders, most of whom keep their eye on the prize and make it to the free breakfast provided at the end of the ride.
The Art of Pizza in L
Residents of the Chicago area take their pizza seriously. The fact that pizzerias around world sell Chicago style deep dish pizza is a testament to this fact. Lansing is no exception with a variety of small independent pizza joints that blow any national chain out of the water. Rico's Pizza in Lansing is a small neighborhood place that has had a loyal following for decade. It is considered somewhat of a local secret, so be sure not to tell anyone. Although Chicago's pizza is famous for its thick crust, many insist that Rico's thin crust cooked well done is actually the best pie on the menu.
