New To Lakewood

Lakewood is ""on the move."" This Cleveland suburb has been heralded as a hip spot to move to; a kind of magnet for creative, young, up-and-coming professionals that are essential in any city that hopes to be relevant in the 21st century. This creative class of young adults appreciates historic preservation, green initiatives, boutique shops, and a good bar scene. Lakewood delivers on all fronts.

Lakewood's scent has been picked up on by Scene Magazine, which rated the place among the best cities to live in 2006 and again in 2011. The American Institute of Architects has also chimed in, praising Lakewood for its ""creative and effective"" work to preserve its historical buildings. There's that word again, ""creative.""

Lakewood was the first city in Ohio to introduce curbside recycling, way back in 1989. This early effort to ""go green"" has paid off handsomely (much more than you'd be paid at the recycling center), and now Lakewood can boast of one of the highest recycling rates in Ohio. There's even a ""Make Lakewood Beautiful"" program, which is a strategy for preserving the city's original architecture. Homeowners are given awards for beating their neighbors in the effort to keep their homes looking, well, the same as they used to look.

Lakewood is big on high-rise apartments. Here, see for yourself. We love the lakeside apartments in this town. If we hadn’t seen them for ourselves, we’d never have believed that Lakewood was the place to be for hip urban living.

Lakewood: Destination Known

If you’re wondering where to find the bar scene, it’s all up and down Madison and Detroit Avenues. In this stretch of town, you can find establishments such as the Winking Lizard Tavern, the Doghouse, and Sullivan's Irish Pub & Restaurant. At Sullivan’s, you can sip an assortment of Irish whiskeys by the fireplace (which comes in handy on those frigid winter nights).

There are four art galleries in Lakewood, including the Bela Dubby, which doubles as a coffeehouse, the Local Girl, Wobblefoot Gallery, and the Pop Shop Gallery & Studio. Come for the goofy names, stay for the cool art.

If you’d like to spend a day in the park, Lakewood Park has live music, an outdoor swimming pool, basketball courts, and killer views of the lake and the Cleveland skyline. The Cleveland Shakespeare Festival has also been known to grace the stage around these parts, so keep an eye out for them.
