Known as a mining town early on, the community grew from a sparse settlement into a prosperous city. The initial find resulted in one coal mine, but others followed suit. The founder of the town, Mary Miller, also founded the first bank of Lafayette. Although the bank did not last but a dozen years, the creation of the bank was a milestone in itself due to having a female president in Miller. Many of the towns historical events center around the coal mining times, but today the city is more for agriculture, with further history yet to be written.
