SUNY Downstate Medica

Howard Beach locals can avail themselves of both excellent medical care and the chance to help student doctors learn at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, a local teaching hospital. The hospital is a full-service facility, offering compassionate care in every medical specialty. The hospital's emergency department is especially worth noting, a Level I trauma center with one of the most intense emergency medicine residency programs in the country. The hospital works to stop medical problems before they begin with neighborhood health clinics and the Center for Community Health Promotion and Wellness, which is dedicated to educating the community about healthy practices.

Highland Park

The Highland Park plateau looks out over both Brooklyn and Queens, offering Howard Beach locals stunning vistas both natural and manmade in every direction. The park's many hiking trails provide a relaxing experience of nature for visitors, be it short and sweet or a longer hike around Ridgewood Reservoir. One of the unique features of the park is the children's farm gardens, where children can learn about how food is grown and harvested in a hands-on setting. The park also has barbecue and picnic areas, baseball fields as well as handball and basketball courts. The park's fitness equipment is also a big draw.
