The small borough of Highland Park packs a big punch. At a total area of only 1.8 square miles, Highland Park makes up in character for what it lacks in land. The history of the area dates back to the 1600s, when the native Lenape people lived in modern-day Highland Park. A century later, a group of wealthy Europeans established settlements there, and modern forms of transit including the Delaware and Raritan Canal and the New Jersey Railroad were established in the 1800s. These days the history of strong community action and leadership shine through in the city. A largely residential borough, Highland Park offers a high quality of life to apartment and single-family home dwellers alike.
