Herndon Apartments

As with many cities in the Washington, D.C. area, Herndon, Virginia, is known as a nexus for the rich and powerful. Herndon cheerfully brags of a median income well above the national average and a poverty rate well below. With enough money to live comfortable and plenty of cushy government jobs around, residents of Herndon are a happy bunch.

Herndon For Dummies

Don't take that personally, we're just looking for attention. Apparently negative attention. Herndon, Virginia's proximity to our nation's capital is only part of the reason it can garner some minor claim to fame. It's not up there with Arlington or Fairfax, but still. As part and parcel of the ""Dulles Technology Corridor,"" a region somewhat akin to the west coast's Silicon Valley sans the social media factor, it's a high tech city with the employers to prove it. These include ITT (no, not ITT Tech), REI Systems, Clearwire, and Guident among other lesser firms specializing in the difficult to understand. The more informal moniker for the area is ""Netplex,"" and without making any allusions to a certain movie starring Sandra Bullock, we think that's pretty cool. We figure the presence of so many geeks is why the male to female ratio skews in favor of females, if you consider said presence a favor.

The town's got an income level to match its economic clout, but that pesky wage gap persists with men earning roughly 9k more per year than their female counterparts. Readers of this site will be pleased to know that there are over 2,500 apartment units accounting for about a third of the total living quarters in this city of nearly 22,000 people.

Herndon has a vision. No seriously, it has a vision for its future that will see a certain number of criteria satisfied by 2030. These include ""citizens who are engaged,"" the maintenance of a residential ""haven,"" ""a planned approach to community development,"" and ""modern multi-modal transportation."" Say what?

That's nearly 20 years away, but still they better move fast because as we all know, time flies.

Herndon Wants To Go Out With You

Come on, don't be shy.

At only 20 minutes away from D.C., obviously 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. and all the rest is an option. But Herndon's got alot going on much closer to home too. This includes over 100 restaurants ranging from Ethiopian and Vietnamese to Thai and...Pizza Hut. Hey, not everyone is as cultured as us, right?

The Herndon Community Center features a full size gymnasium, a pool, three racquetball courts, and even personal training services like it's some kind of celebrity fitness establishment. Birthday parties and all the rest are a definite option here too, so consider it a sort of one stop shop for all your knee straining and kid entertaining needs.

The yearly Herndon Festival is a glorious display of foods, fireworks, and even a business exposition for the fuddy-duddies who see little need to separate business from pleasure, and may even prefer to dispense with pleasure altogether. For a look a the festival's proceedings over the years, enjoy this photo gallery.

Herndon's even got its own YouTube channel, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the presentation. In fact enjoy it with some of that leftover popcorn you picked up at the Herndon Festival. Don't let it go to waste.

Herndon is almost adjacent to Dulles Airport so depending on how close you live, it is either a long walk, a short taxi ride or one Metro stop if you go that route. In any event, it shouldn't cost more than a few dollars, and if you're sneaking you could probably hop on one of the hotel airport shuttles.

  • Does Herndon have any famous museums or exhibitions?

Herndon is home to the Herndon Depot Museum. The building served as a train station in the dairy community until 1968, when the railroad was converted into a hike-and-bike trail and Herndon converted its train station into a museum and visitors center. Operated by the Herndon Historical Society, the museum houses railroad memorabilia, information on United States Navy Commander William Lewis Herndon, for whom the town was named, and artifacts from the USS Herndon (DD-198), from World War II, and from local residents. Museums in neighboring towns include the National Air and Space Museum, Heritage Farm Museum, and Great Falls Tavern Museum.
