Hazelwood, Missouri, is a fun-loving city in the Show-Me state. A suburb of St. Louis, Hazelwood brings the Steve Martin movie, Parenthood, to mind. It should; the movie was set there. This city was first settled by Native Americans, then the French, and finally the Spanish. Today, it's home to all of the above as well as plenty of people from other ethnic groups. There are currently around 25,000 people who make their homes here. Hazelwood is both business and family friendly. If you’re looking for a great job, you’ll be happy to learn that there are more than a few Fortune 500 companies in town.

Hazelwood has been known as a great place to live since well before the first American settlers homesteaded into town. Back at the time of the last ice age, the Paleolithic population was hard at work hunting mammoth in Hazelwood. Since that time, the area has usually been inhabited by one tribe or another. In the 1700s, French settlers created a village on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi River—long before the region would come to be known as Hazelwood. These early settlers were big on fishing, hunting, and, of course, protecting their national interests by creating outposts and securing trade agreements with the Native Americans. You can learn all about the French in Hazelwood by clicking here. In later years, Americans migrated into the area from Kentucky, Virginia, the Deep South, and elsewhere in the country. As St. Louis grew into a modern metropolis, Hazelwood grew into the "second ring" suburb that it is today.
Hazelwood is home to dozens of dining and shopping venues, plenty of kid friendly activities, and easy access to the great outdoors. There are a number of parks in the area, including Brookes, Friendship, Howdershell, and the stately Harry S. Truman. All of these provide ample recreational activity for everyone in the family. You’ll get to make good use of the parks too, since this part of the country has a moderate climate that waffles between cold (but not frigid) and hot and muggy (be sure to pack some mosquito repellent).
If you’ve ever wondered what a Middle American City looks like, look no further than Hazelwood. Not only is this place a good representation of “Middle America” when it comes to demographics and the economy, it’s also pretty close to being in the middle of America, geographically speaking.
You, And What to Do, In Hazelwood
On a nice day, the White Birch Bay Aquatic Center affords patrons no end of opportunity to dip and dive. This is an outdoor pool and is only available on warm days in the spring, summer, and fall. Where can one swim in the winter, you ask? In neighboring Florissant. The people of Florissant are always happy to welcome their neighbors from Hazelwood to the pool party—just make sure to wear proper swim attire.
If you’re not into parks and outdoor recreation, don’t despair. There’s plenty of indoor fun to be had in Hazelwood. For one thing, you’ll only be a hop, skip, and a jump away from the St. Louis Mills. This outlet mall contains a massive movie theater, a skate park, and a martial arts center (and lots of outlet stores, of course). Kung Pow!
If you’re hungry, Hazelwood has just the thing. Use this useful website to find information on the wide range of culinary offerings in town. There’s Italian, Mexican, Asian, and, of course, the always delightful miscellany of treats and bar grub.
