The Jewel of Harahan
At the southernmost tip of the city, right next to the ambling and peaceful Mississippi River, lies 88 acres of pure green bliss. Affectionately termed the “Jewel of Harahan,” this vast parkland space is one of the few green spaces left in a town that has become very urbanized. These days, remnants of the old Colonial Golf and Country Club remain, but the real treasure here are the quiet peaceful moments of silence you can find on the property. It feels like you are a world away, even though New Orleans is just a stone’s throw downriver.
There are a number of schools located within Harahan, all operated by the Jefferson Parish Public School System, but the most notable one is definitely the elementary. Harahan Elementary is not only a beautiful building from an architectural standpoint, but it is also a great educational facility, and also included in the Department of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places. Aside from the elementary, there is also Riverdale Middle School and Riverdale High School, both of which provide top-notch educations to the town’s young population. The best part is living here means you get access to all of these great institutions for free.
