Why should I move to Glen Allen?
Situated just 20 minutes outside of Richmond, Glen Allen boasts a low tax rate, a reasonable cost of living, and a tight knit community. The town was ranked #66 on CNN Money Magazine's 2006 list of America's "Best Places to Live". Glen Allen has seen much economic growth, with the 850-acre Innsbrook Office Park that is home to several Fortune 1000 companies. It is a city rich in history and culture with historical landmarks like the Walkerton Tavern and the Cultural Arts Center which produces many events and community programs throughout the year. The city also boasts a handful of world class facilities including the Glen Allen Stadium and the Dominion Club (home to Virginia's only PGA Tour event).
Is Glen Allen a town where I'll need a car to get around?
Yes. Nearly 90% of Glen Allen's residents drive to work, with the rest participating in carpools or working from home. The GRTC serves the greater Richmond area, but doesn't have any stops in Glen Allen. It would be possible to taxi or bike to the nearest station for transportation to Richmond and other nearby cities, but service is fairly slow and can require several transfers. With the exception of those who would be willing to bike around town, a car is a necessity in Glen Allen.
Is Glen Allen a good place for younger people?
With a population of close to 13,000, Glen Allen is located in Henrico County, Virginia. A town preferred by educated older folks as well as families, Glen Allen isn't the best place for younger people seeking their own kind. In fact, a full 35 percent of Glen Allen's population is between the ages of 35 and 54, and 25 percent is under the age of 18; these numbers constitute most of the family contigency. Another 15 percent is over the age of 55, leaving 25 percent of Glen Allen residents between the ages of 18 and 34. Glen Allen isn't a great place for younger folks requiring an active nightlife either, as most of it takes place in Richmond.
Is the cost of living in Glen Allen higher relative to surrounding areas or other cities?
Glen Allen's cost of living exceeds the average cost of living in the US by 14 percent. Ashland to the northeast is 11 percent cheaper than Glen Allen. To the southeast, Chamberlayne is just 1 percent cheaper than Glen Allen, while Mechanicsville is 1 percent more expensive. Laurel to the south is 10 percent cheaper than Glen Allen, and Short Pump to the west is 3 percent more expensive. Wyndham to the northwest, however, is 52 percent more expensive than Glen Allen. Therefore, Glen Allen is about on par with most surrounding towns apart from Wyndham, which is significantly more expensive than Glen Allen.
