To enrich your mind and soak in some of the area's culture at the same time, you may be interested in the Schiele Museum of Natural History, located within the city on East Garrison Boulevard. Experience a number of regular museum exhibits and dedicated historical halls, as well as the Charlotte area's only planetarium, the James H. Lynn Planetarium. In nearby Belmont, you can find the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden along NC 279. For other educational needs or wants, the city is home to three of Gaston County's Public Library branches as well as Belmont Abbey College and Gaston College.

While the city only has one indoor mall, Westfield Eastridge draws a number of happy shoppers to the area. You can enjoy a number of popular shopping options, such as Sears, Footlocker, Hollister, and Hibbet Sports, among many other popular stores that sell everything from clothing to home goods. The mall also offers a complete food court and full family restaurants. Franklin Square is a three-section strip mall with stores such as Best Buy, Michaels, Lowes, Old Navy, and PetSmart. After a long day of shopping, you can kick back in Franklin Square's cinema and watch a movie on one of its 14 screens.
