Elmwood Park is known for its good food, especially Italian food. One of the most notable restaurants is Johnnie's Beef, known for its mouth-watering Italian beef sandwiches that locals cannot get enough of. Often, there is a line outside the establishment that wraps all the way around the block, but thankfully the line moves fast. Being a suburb of Chicago, there are also a host of pizza joints serving that classic deep dish style. Since pizza is one of the things that the area makes best, almost any Italian restaurant is apt to have good one to sink your teeth into.
The Parks and Recreation Department of Elmwood Park offers a gym and weight room for your enjoyment, allowing for physical exercise without worry of costly fees. An adult volleyball league is in full swing each spring, with both the games and practices scheduled at night for the working professional. In addition to this, you will find several small parks and playgrounds for children, including Central Park, which is aptly named as it lies right in the village center. Here you can enjoy picturesque scenes from the park's walking trails and then rest in its gazebo.

The Elmwood Park area is served by the Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, which is located just 15 minutes west of downtown Chicago. It has over 250 beds and employs over 1,200 individuals. This not-for-profit community hospital was founded in 1961, but in 2008 it became part of the Loyola Health Services network affiliated with Loyola University in Chicago. It offers all of the services of a large health system including an ER, a fitness center, an outpatient center, and a birth center. It is also home to several top-notch departments, including orthopedics, urology, and cardiology.
