To truly experience the culture of El Centro, be sure to attend the Mardi Gras Light Parade & Street Festival each winter. The festival takes place in February and is designed to recreate a real New Orleans Mardi Gras. A lighted parade runs through the downtown area and is adorned with the traditional colors of purple, green, and gold. The street fair is full of vendors, artists, and food establishments to ensure that you have everything you need to enjoy your time here, while remaining in awe of the intricate costumes, glittery masks, and wonderful music.
El Centro Outdoors
If you love the great outdoors, you will feel right at home in El Centro. The city boasts a large amount of outdoor activities designed for all ages. The Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge is home to over 400 species of birds, making it ideal for bird watching. The Salton Sea Mudpots and Volcanoes are located nearby and you can learn about this geologic anomaly with a simple visit. If you love to fish, check out one of the inland destinations. These spots are great for angle fishing with their variety of catfish and striped bass.
If you love to shop, a visit to the Imperial Valley Mall should be on your list of things to do. The large mall is home to a variety of stores so that there is something for everyone in the family. After a long day of shopping, stop by the food court where you can choose your meal from an array of establishments. You can also take in a flick at the Cinemark Imperial Valley Mall 14, where you take your pick of a multitude of new releases while enjoying a big tub of buttered popcorn or large box of candy.
