El Cajon, California

Named El Cajon, which is Spanish for box, this city in San Diego County is surrounded by mountains. It was a natural crossroads. At first, for gold mining operations, and later for agricultural products. The valley has been famous for production of raisins, avocados and other fruits.

No Urban Sprawl

Because development was carefully regulated during the last half of the 1900s, El Cajon does not suffer from sprawl, and still retains some of the feel from its early days. Downtown remains an area of low rise buildings with a grassy median in the middle of the main street. When looking for your El Cajon apartment, you quickly realize that this city of just under 100,000 people is a great assortment of ethnicities and neighborhoods. Both older and newer complexes are found throughout the city and there will be many choices. Consider your commuting time as this is primarily a car oriented community.

Lake Murray

You'll find there are plenty of things to do in this city, too. For the outdoor enthusiast, there are a number of parks and golf courses, and within a short distance huge state parks providing space for camping. The Mission Trails Regional Park is huge and includes Lake Murray. To the west and within a short drive, you'll find wonderful desert parks too. The Boardwalk is a local favorite. Eat pizza, play arcade games and have an afternoon indoors.

Truck Stop Dining

Your El Cajon apartment won't be too far from some of the great restaurants you'll find around town. There are a number of national chains but plenty of locally owned cafes too. Kip's for sushi and Chinese is a local favorite. Crowded at lunch, it's worth the wait! Zizzo's for pizza and Italian food and you'll always find a warm welcome there. There are a number of very good Mexican restaurants sprinkled around town, and don't miss a breakfast or lunch at Perry's. Basically a truck stop, the food is cheap and good.If truckers swear by it, then it must be good.

Traveling Musicians

Nightlife in El Cajon consists mostly of local places with loads of personality, and while the town may seem quiet, there's a party every night of the week to be found. The Caddy Shack downtown is where local and traveling musicians gather for casual evenings of music. Dumont's is a sports bar early in the day but switches over to live music later at night. With friendly patrons, you might want to drop in as soon as you're settled into your El Cajon apartment.
